He strapped on a knee brace, texted another man, and watched his marriage catch fire. This is the story of how he did it on purpose.
My name is Chris Hartley. I’m thirty-seven, I live in Kentish Town, and six months ago I tore my knee at Hampstead Heath parkrun and spent the next four months sitting on a bench watching my wife get faster, fitter, and more desirable than she’d been in years. I also spent those four months slowly, deliberately, and entirely intentionally engineering the most arousing situation of my marriage. This is that story.
Gemma and I took up running together in June. Two months in, I went over on my knee at the three-kilometre mark and ended up in a brace with a physio appointment and a prescription to rest. Gemma didn’t want to run alone. I didn’t want her progress to stall. So I texted Aled Rhys, a calm, broad-shouldered Welshman from the running club who I’d known for a few months and trusted immediately. I asked him to pace her on Saturdays. He said yes. And that, as they say, was the beginning.
What I didn’t tell Aled, and didn’t fully admit to myself at the time, was that I’d been thinking about him and Gemma for longer than I should have been comfortable with. The way she talked about runs with him, animated and specific and lit up in a way she hadn’t been for a while. The way she pulled on her new running kit and checked herself in the mirror. The way she came home on Saturday afternoons with her pulse still high and her face flushed and her hands unable to stop moving. I noticed all of it. And noticing it made me hard in a way that took me a while to examine properly.
The examination happened on a Saturday morning alone in the flat. Gemma was out on the Heath with Aled, wearing those new fitted leggings for the second week running, and I sat down at my desk with every intention of getting some work done. I lasted about four minutes. What followed was the most clarifying wank of my adult life. I came thinking about my wife being fucked by another man, and the guilt lasted approximately thirty seconds before it was replaced by the certain, undeniable knowledge that I wanted it to actually happen.
So I made it happen. That’s the thing about me you should understand before you read this book. I’m not a passive participant in my own marriage. I don’t stumble into things. I engineered it. I escalated the teasing, I encouraged the flirting, I told Gemma outright, in the dark one night with my hands on her hips, that I wouldn’t be angry if something happened. I watched her face change when she understood I meant it. And then I sent her to his flat on a Saturday morning with a text that said have fun and meant every syllable.
She came home two hours later looking exactly like a woman who’d spent the morning being thoroughly fucked by a patient, unhurried Welshman with considerably more stamina than me. She cried. She apologised. She told me she’d been bad. I pulled her hand onto the front of my jeans and let her feel exactly how I felt about that. The confession that followed, every detail, his mouth on her, his cock stretching her wider than she was used to, the three orgasms she hadn’t expected, the fact that she’d swallowed and then begged him to come inside her, it was the most intensely arousing hour of my life and I was still finding new reasons to be grateful for it weeks later.
The reclamation sex afterwards was something else. Sliding inside my wife hours after another man had been there, feeling the difference, feeling the evidence of what she’d done, and knowing she’d come home to me. Hearing her say she wanted to do it again. Hearing her agree, without hesitation, to my one condition: next time, it happens in our bedroom, with me in the room.
The night Aled came to our flat is not something I’m going to describe in detail here, because you should read it the way it was written. What I’ll tell you is that I watched my wife come three times in our bed whilst I sat in the chair by the wardrobe with my cock in my hand, and she looked at me across the room when she was coming and called my name, not his. That’s a thing I’ll carry for the rest of my life. The knowledge that I gave her that, that I made it happen, that it was mine to give.
We’re still running. Gemma is down to sub-twenty-seven minutes now. I’m back on the course after my knee healed, and I’m very much not keeping her pace, which suits all three of us perfectly. Aled still runs beside her on Saturday mornings. He comes over some evenings. The arrangement is settled, warm, and very much ongoing. The marriage has never been better. The sex has never been filthier. And every time I sit on that bench on Parliament Hill watching her disappear into the trees with him, I feel something that I can only describe as completely, specifically, deliberately satisfied.
